Standards
Editorial Policy
Art of the Travel exists to provide honest, detailed, experience-based travel writing. This editorial policy describes how content is created, what standards it is held to, and how commercial relationships are handled.
Editorial independence
All content on this Site is written by James Morrow, based on personal travel experience and independent research. No tourism board, rail operator, travel brand, or affiliate partner has editorial input into what I write or how I assess a route, destination, or service.
When I write that the overnight train from Paris to Venice is worth taking, it's because I've taken it — more than once — and believe it. When I note that a particular booking platform has frustrating UX, that's my honest assessment, even if I earn a commission from linking to it.
Content standards
Every article published on this Site meets the following standards:
- First-hand experience: Route guides and destination articles are based on journeys I've actually taken or extensively researched with primary sources. I don't write about places I haven't visited or can't speak about with genuine knowledge.
- Practical accuracy: Prices, schedules, and booking details are verified at the time of writing using official operator websites and first-party sources. Articles are dated and updated when information changes.
- Original writing: All content is originally written for this Site. I do not republish press releases, rewrite manufacturer copy, or use automated content generation without substantial editorial oversight and original analysis.
- Clear attribution: When I cite external sources, statistics, or historical information, I attribute them clearly in the text.
Types of content
This Site publishes the following categories of content:
- Route guides: Detailed practical guides to specific train journeys, including booking advice, pricing, what to expect, and what makes the journey worth taking.
- Destination essays: Longer-form pieces about places, focused on the experience of being there rather than a checklist of attractions.
- Culinary travel: Food-focused travel writing — markets, restaurants, regional specialties, and the role of food in understanding a place.
- Interactive tools: Trivia games, itinerary planners, and route finders, built to make travel planning more engaging.
- Travel philosophy: Essays on slow travel, the means of movement, and what makes a journey meaningful.
Affiliate relationships
This Site earns revenue through affiliate programs. When you book through certain links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. These relationships are handled with full transparency:
- Affiliate links are disclosed on every page where they appear.
- Commission potential does not influence what I write or recommend.
- I have given honest assessments of services I earn commissions from.
- Editorial content is never written to serve affiliate goals.
Full details: Affiliate Disclosure.
Corrections policy
I take accuracy seriously. If I get something wrong — a schedule, a price, a historical detail — I want to know about it. Please contact me with the article URL and the correction.
Confirmed errors are corrected within 48 hours and noted with a dated correction at the bottom of the article. Substantive updates (new route information, changed schedules) are reflected with an updated publication date.
Press trips & partnerships
I occasionally accept invitations from tourism boards or rail operators to experience routes and destinations. When this happens, it is always disclosed in the resulting article. Accepting an invitation does not guarantee positive coverage — my editorial assessment remains independent.
